Ancient of Days
I Will Call Upon the Lord
Grace Greater Than All Our Sin
When I Look into your Holiness
Arms of My Father

I hadn't sung When I Look since my days at Greentown First Baptist (2000-2002). It was written nearly thirty years ago, but it felt appropriate even as we sang it this week. There is so much "hero worship" in today's society, although all of today's heros are seemingly disposable. If scandal doesn't take someone out of their place of exaltation, time itself seems to wear out the veneer of admiration. We are simply unable to focus on one thing for more than a few weeks until we're moving on to something else.

I admit most of these feelings are directed towards modern "art" and "artists." Most of what's out there had very little lasting value, almost as if it were made to be consumed and forgotten. Away from the mainstream, this seems to be less true.

So when I added this song to the set, I was stuck on one line: the reason I live is to worship you.

The reason we should worship God is because He is different. He is "other" than us. His holiness and a life in pursuit of a knowledge of Him has actual value, even by today's lofty throwaway standards. It's okay to appreciate someone's work on this earth, but be sure to give God first what is due Him.

Set: 5.21.06

Another lesson in being prepared for anything.
I was out of town this weekend, as was my backup.
In football, there is a "third string."

We don't really have a "third string."

Thank goodness for Laura Ferris, one of our college students.
I told her to think of the whole thing as "real-life ministry experience."

Set: 5.14.06

Victory in Jesus
Victory Chant
I Stand in Awe
How Great is Our God

This Sunday was "Victory Sunday," hence all the "victory" songs.
We had a...problem...with the soundboard after I Stand in Awe.
Feedback, then silence. No mics.
Stopping would have been smart I guess, but I wasn't thinking that way.
We went ahead and sang How Great.
A good lesson in being prepared for anything.

The Wondrous Cross

Palm Sunday.
Hosanna!

Nate Quick and I went to see Brennan Manning in Zionsville, and at the end of one of his talks, he picked up a small black tape recorder, held it to the mic, and played a cassette of a More Precious/I Exalt Thee medley. I had to recreate that moment on Sunday morning, and I thought this was a good time to do it.

Set 4.2.06

Blessed Be the Name
Cry of My Heart
We Will Worship the Lamb of Glory

Blessed is one of the better songs I have heard recently. It's hard to not play it constantly.

Set: 3.26.06

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Blessed Assurance
Oh Lord, You're Beautiful
Holiness (Take My Life)

My first week leading worship full-time.

Why?

In talking to worship leaders from all around, I hear the same thing from most of them in regards to style: "We try to have a blended service, some hymns, some choruses. The new songs say things in such a personal way, but we like the old songs, too..." Something to that effect, anyway. Our church is no different, so we're posting our Sunday morning worship sets to show what we've been doing.

Along the way, something might come up -- an idea or thought, something that worked or didn't work for us--this is devoted to music in worship and how we seek to encounter our Creator. Comments are welcome!
